SOUTH AFRICA/ G20 DIPLOMAT SUMMIT « WORLD MUST LISTEN TO AFRICA » – CHINESE DIPLOMAT

China is calling for greater global attention to Africa’s concerns, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi urging G20 nations to support the continent’s development and peace efforts. Speaking at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Johannesburg, Wang emphasized Africa’s growing role in global governance and warned against external interference in its affairs.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged the world to take Africa’s concerns seriously, emphasizing the continent’s role in shaping global discussions. Speaking at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Johannesburg on Thursday, Wang called for stronger support for Africa’s development and peace efforts.

“We must listen to what Africa has to say, take Africa’s concerns seriously, support Africa’s actions, and work for peace and development on the continent,” Wang stated, according to an official release from Beijing on Friday. He highlighted the importance of leaving a « distinct African mark » on this year’s G20 Summit.

South Africa, the only African nation in the G20, is currently holding the presidency until November. This week’s two-day gathering marks the first time an African city has hosted a G20 foreign ministers’ summit. The meeting also follows last year’s decision to admit the African Union as the bloc’s 21st member.

Wang described 2025 as an “African moment” and reaffirmed China’s “firm” commitment to supporting African nations in resolving their challenges independently. He also reiterated Beijing’s opposition to external interference in African affairs, reinforcing China’s longstanding policy of non-intervention.

With Africa’s growing presence in global governance, its role in the upcoming G20 Summit is expected to be a key focus of international discussions.
