As reiterated five years ago, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda recently affirmed that democracy is not defined by the West, pointing out the importance of having the ideals of democracy been developed with respect to particular countries, rather than being imposed by outside nations.
The president was speaking during an interview with the national broadcaster on Monday, June 17. He was responding to questions affiliated to the nation’s democracy and arguments from some foreign critics who say Rwanda is not democratic.
President KAGAME explained that democracy must first be a reality, and must come from the people. While highlighting it is a product of context, he quoted « Democracy is about freedom of choice ». His comments come amid Western criticisms of democratic processes in Africa. From The Rwandan leader’s point of view, the future of the nation should be defined by the will and interest of the people. In Africa, Kagame reiterated, that democracy cannot be decreed, it has to be built, and also be prepared to suit the African people.
He seized the opportunity to urge young people to actively engage in politics in shaping positive political outcomes and fostering the development of the country.
