The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has urged for more intentional global action against climate change affirming the world is on the brink to limit global temperatures.
He made the remarks on Tuesday, November 12 while addressing the COP 29 World Leaders Climate Action Summit in Baku in Azerbaijan. In his address, he underlined there is an urgent need for stakeholders to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius before it is too late, reminding that they had agreed to move beyond fossil fuels and scale up climate adaptation amid others.
According to the UN chief, slowing down gas emissions and climate adaptation would have serious impact on every economy. He stated that the future is promising given how much was invested in grids and renewables which surpassed the amount spent on fossil fuels last year, a first in history.
With that said, Guterres urged world leaders to attach importance to emission reductions that is to cut global emissions by 9 per cent each year till 2030 where they plan to halt deforestation.
However, Guterres drew the attention of G20 leaders as they must take the lead as they are the largest emitters with greatest capacities and responsibilities.
