Cameroonians all over the country on Monday may 20th have joined in the celebration of their unity day. A day the country obtained its unitary state opposed to the existing federal government. A system abolished by then President, Amadou Ahidjo. This year’s theme is centred on « Army and Nation : Together for a United, Peaceful and Prosperous Cameroon. » The day is backed with various activities including a military parade among others.
The national day also known as the unity day in Cameroon is celebrated annually on may 20th originating from a referendum on may 20th 1972 where Cameroonian voted for a unitary state as opposed to the existing federal state. The federal system of government was then abolished by President Ahmadou ahidjo giving birth to the unitary state known as the republic of cameroon
The cameroon republic day attracts the military and civilian parades as well as a presidential speech. On this special day, schools and businesses remain closed so that everyone can partake in the festivities.
Last year’s 51st celebration was centred on the theme « defence forces and Cameroonian people in harmony to safeguard peace and national unity, bedrock of a strong and prosperous cameroon »
The national unity in the country however remains a constant call for concern as the country battles with the Anglophone crisis which has been causing negative outcomes in the two english speaking regions. Apart from that boko harram, an insurgency has as well been a security threat in the country’s far north region.
Peace measures have been brought to the table among which is the major national dialogue between the government of Cameroon and various opposition parties aimed at resolving the Anglophone crisis. As Monday may 20th 2024 marks it’s 52nd celebration, the nation’s leadership Paul Biya who has been in power for 42 years now has constantly talked up the idea that cameron is one and indivisible.
The unity the nation celebrates is however still being questioned as changing narratives still tops the agenda.
