Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made public his decision to resign from office once his successor is chosen by his party, Liberal party of Canada. He announced on Monday January 06.
As a result of undergrowing pressure within his own party, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Pierre James Trudeau announced on Monday that he would step down from office and as leader of his Liberal Party of Canada once a replacement is chosen leaving behind his nine-year stretch as leader.
In a press conference he noted « This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election, »
He noted that the parliament would be suspended until March 24 as a meeting would be held this week to begin the process of finding a new leader.
Trudeau, aged 53, had faced growing calls to quit from inside his party, which ramped up in December when Deputy Prime Minister and long-time ally Chrystia Freeland abruptly resigned.
The calls come as Trump vowed to impose a tax of 25% on imported Canadian goods which economists warned would significantly hurt Canada’s economy as party members urged Trudeau to act decisively.
According to Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre on X, « nothing has changed » following Trudeau’s resignation as he terms it a move for the party to stray in pôwer.
Liberals will now choose a new leader to take the party into the next election, which must be held on or before 20 October.
Trudeau has been the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada since 2015 and the leader of the Liberal Party since 2013.
