Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has said he is « closely following » the Ankara agreement signed between Ethiopia and Somalia with the help of Turkish Mediation. This was revealved in his conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron.
In a telephone conversation recently with French President Emmanuel Macron, Egypt’s leadership Abdel Fattah El-Sisi expressed hope that the Ankara Declaration Signed recently between Ethiopia and Somalia would add to lasting stability in the Horn of Africa’s region noting that he is closely watching the strategic deal reach by mediation from Turkiye President, Recep Tayyip Erdorgan.
President Sisi hopes the deal aligns with the principles of international law as he pointed out that Cairo is « working to support Somalia to achieve security and stability, whether through bilateral cooperation or by participating in the African Union Peacekeeping mission at Somalia’s request »
Relations between Somalia and ethiopia became strained when Addis ababa struck a deal with Somalia’s breakaway territory of Somaliland to use its Red Sea port in exchange for Recognition of its independence.
Mogadishu and Addis Ababa in mid-December sealed the Ankara aggreement expected to defuse growing tensions.
Both parties « reaffirmed their respect and commitment to one another’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity »
President Erdorgan described the deal as a historic one saying it is » the first step towards a new beginning based on peace and cooperation between Somalia and Ethiopia. «
