KENYA-CHINA/ BILATERAL RELATIONS PRES. RUTO REQUESTS BEIJING’S BACKING TO JOIN BRICS

Kenyan president, William Ruto in a meeting held with a top Chinese official, Li Xi on Monday November 4 requested for Beijing’s backing for Kenya’s aim to join the BRICS+ group. He as well pledged to strengthened ties between the two countries.

In an article drawing heavily from a speech during the launch of ceremony of « Xi Jinping: The Governance of China » in Swahili at the University of Nairobi, August 14, 2023, Kenya’s foreign policy managers were called to heart the idea that BRICS is the future of the World’s economic power.

On Monday November 4, Kenyan presidnet William Ruto in a bilateral meeting with a top Chinese official Li Xi at state house Nairobi, requested for Beijing’s backing for Kenya’s aim to join the BRICS plus group of nations.

During the talks the Kenyan leadership vowed to boost ties between the two countries.

Currently the two parties are cooperating on development projects in the country.The BRICS group founded in 2006, had Brazil, Russia, India and China as members. South Africa in 2010 became a member.

The 2024 BRICS summit was the sixteenth annual BRICS summit, held in Kazan, Russia. It was the first BRICS summit to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates as members, following their accession to the organization at the 15th BRICS summit.

Thirteen nations have been added as partner countries of BRICS: Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
