Applauding the nation’s steady growth and need for investment, Malawi’s High commissioner to Tanzania, Andrew Kumwenda has re-echoed the need for the east African nation to strategically focus on enhancing trade and investment in the east African sub region.
His remarks come amid the cancellation of the inaugural Tanzania- Malawi trade and investment forum in Dar es Salaam last week following the death of vice president Saulos Chilima. He highlighted such fora would continue in the nearest future depending on coordination between the local private sector and other counterparts in the target country.
In line with the passing of the nation’s Vice president, Kumwenda added that once the 21 days of mourning are over, his team would start working on the next slide of their proposal. Malawi investment and Trade Centre (MITC) Chief Executive Officer Paul Kwengwere elucidated that the forum was not the first for the nation as past fora yielded notable investments and partnerships, contributing to Malawi’s economic development.
As per figures from the International Trade Centre (ITC) in 2022, Malawi imported goods worth $48 million from the East African Community (EAC), and exported goods worth $176.1 million.
