Ahead of the resumption of the July 2024 session of the National assembly, pressure is mounting on the two chambers to enact a law on the new minimum wage. This comes amid differences between governors and lawmakers on the minimum wage to apply, as the national Assembly has to ensure there is compliance at the level of the public and private sectors.
Pressure has intensified on the two chambers of the National assembly regarding how to deploy legislative powers to resolve the national minimum wage tussle between workers and the federal government. The National assembly is also tasked with ensuring compliance by all stakeholders.
This follows reports that the apex legislative body has been contemplating sanctions against states that fail to comply with the minimum wage law to be enacted soon.
Amid the current stakes, the federal government including executive and legislative arms have been on the same page in ensuring that the state and private sector adhere to raising the wage above the N62,000 that had been rejected by the Labour unions.
Though there is still division at the level of states, an executive Bill is expected to be submitted to the National assembly by President TINUBU on the new minimum wage before the end of this month, ahead of the resumption of lawmakers in the first week of July 2024.
