The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov has asserted that Russia is not stalling peace talks but Ukraine and it is ready for dialogue. He was speaking to the media on Tuesday.
Speaking on Tuesday, the Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov blamed the lack of progress on Moscow-Kiev peace talks on Ukraine. He made the remarks during a press briefing less than 24 hour after he stated the Kremlin is not in talks with Trump’s team.
According to the spokesperson Russia remains open to talks and with the lack of progress, Moscow will proceed with its special military operation. The Kremlin representative added that ensuring national safety was one of Russia’s primary objectives in the conflict.
Let us recall on Sunday, US President-elect Donald Trump affirmed he planned to discuss the Ukraine conflict with Vladimir Putin, claiming the Russian leader had been keen to meet ‘as soon as possible’. This comes after Trump held a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris this month, and claimed Kiev was ‘ready to make a deal’.
Responding to ending the conflict, Zelensky stated « cannot simply end with a piece of paper and a few signatures.”
It is worthy of note that Moscow had launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements. It further urged Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion, this resulted in the EU, and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
