On a high diplomatic tour of the region, President Vladimir Putin of Russia has made a stop in Vietnam. The state visit that centered on Security and cooperation is unfolding with the signing of 11 memoranda of cooperation in key areas of mutual interest. The visit debuted and wrapped up on Thursday June 20, 2024.
After making a stop in North Korea, a first visit in twenty-four years, the Russian leadership, Vladimir Putin is in Vietnam. On the sidelines of this visit, Russia and Vietnam have pledged to strengthen ties with security collaboration and cooperation on the menu of exchanges.
Vladimir Putin’s state visit to Hanoi was intended to signal his country still has allies in the region.
The Russian president arrived at Hanoi airport in the early hours of Thursday, was received by the Vietnamese deputy prime minister Tran Hong Ha and the top party diplomat Le Hoai Trung. He arrived from a high-profile visit to North Korea, where he signed a defense pact with Kim Jong-un that included a clause requiring the countries to come to each other’s aid if either was attacked.
According to Vietnamese president, To Lam, the two countries have plans to push up cooperation in defense and security, how to deal with non-traditional security challenges on the basis of international law, for peace and security in the region and the world.
Though Putin’s visit has drawn criticism from the US, both leaders went ahead to sign 11 memoranda for cooperation in areas including civil nuclear projects, energy and petrol cooperation, education and disease prevention.
In a nutshell, the leader of the Russian Federation elucidated the talks were constructive and that both sides had « identical or very close » positions on key international issues as they promised to invest in natural gas.
