RWANDA/ HEALTH / MARBURG VIRUS EPIDEMIC IS OVER – HEALTH MINISTER

Rwanda’s minister of health, Dr Sabin Nsanzimana unveiled during an Africa CDC press briefing that the country is free from the Marburg virus epidemic.

Speaking on Thursday, he affirmed no new cases had been recorded in the past two weeks.

The Marburg virus epidemic has been eradicated in Rwanda, where no new cases have been reported for nearly two weeks, Dr Sabin Nsanzimana revealed during a press briefing of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

« Marburg virus in Rwanda is over. It has been a month without a death related to Marburg disease, » he stated.

According to the Rwanda minister, all patients treated for the virus were discharged from hospitals, and the total number of victims of the epidemic amounted to 15 people.

The Marburg fever epidemic was declared in Rwanda on September 28, while the vaccination campaign with an experimental vaccine began in October this year.

With a high mortality rate, the Marburg virus, which causes high fever, often accompanied by hemorrhages affecting multiple organs, is part of the filovirus family, to which the Ebola virus belongs. The latter has already caused several deadly epidemics on the African continent.

This milestone announcement underscores the commitment of the Rwandan government to addressing and eradicating healthcare challenges.
