History is about to be made as Millions of eligible South Africans cast their ballots in one of the most decisive elections. These elections represent a pivotal moment in the nation’s democracy.
Over 27 million registered voters are casting their ballots on May 29,2024. The ruling ANC stands in a hot spot in the elections, with its fate on the balance. About 52 political parties are contesting including the newly formed MK party of then President Jacob Zuma.
Ahaed of vote day, President Cyril Ramaphosa commended the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for their meticulous preparations, ensuring a smooth voting process. Reports hold that the amended Electoral Act now allows for three ballot papers, with independent candidates entering the National and Provincial Elections for the first time after a successful Constitutional Court challenge by the New Nation Movement in 2020.
Changes in the election format include splitting the 400 seats in the National Assembly for contestation on two ballot papers the National Compensatory and Regional Ballots. The Provincial Ballot also allows for participation from independent candidates and political parties, except for the provinces of Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, and North West.
Despite some past unrest, the Eastern Cape government expressed hopes for a peaceful voting day following sporadic protests during special votes. The province saw negotiations between government officials, the taxi industry, and ANC provincial leaders to address disruptions, aiming for a smooth electoral process.
This crucial polls represents the seventh general election South Africa has held since the end of white minority rule 30 years ago.
In the meantime, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC.) has revealed that a record 27.79 million people are registered to vote the highest number to date.
