Tensions flared at the United Nations Security Council as Sudan and the United Arab Emirates engaged in a heated exchange over accusations of UAE support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in conflict-ridden Sudan.
During a Security Council session on Tuesday June 18th 2024, Sudanese representative at the UN Al-Harith Idris blamed the UAE of backing the Rapid Support Forces and presented evidence to support his claims. In response, Emirati delegate Mohamed Abu Shehab dismissed the allegations as « absurd » and pointed to humanitarian aid provided by the UAE to war-affected areas in Sudan.
Despite the aid, the Sudanese official retaliated his stance, accusing the UAE of sponsoring terrorism in Sudan and obstructing peace efforts. According to Al HATHI, Sudan’s commitment to achieving peace have remained futile because of the attacks masterminded by the RSF, thus hindering the implementation of the Jeddah Humanitarian Agreement.
The Emirati representative countered, calling out Sudan for using the Security Council platform to spread false accusations and divert attention from ongoing violations. He reiterated the call for a return to negotiations as the key to resolving the conflict.
Amid escalating tensions, Sudan released a letter accusing the UAE of violating UN resolutions and bilateral agreements on arms transfers. The letter included evidence of Emirati passports found with the RSF, further fuelling the diplomatic clash between the two nations.
The clash represents a significant escalation in the longstanding tensions between Sudan and the UAE, raising concerns about the impact of external support on the conflict in Sudan. Both parties continue to stand firm on their positions.
