Indonesia has officially joined BRICS, becoming the latest member of the influential bloc of emerging economies, which now includes 11 nations. The announcement on Monday and reiterated Tuesday comes to strengthen cooperation across the Global South.
Indonesia has officially joined BRICS as a full member, Brazil’s government announced on Monday, marking a significant expansion of the bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
In a statement on Tuesday, Indonesia’s foreign ministry welcomed the move, describing BRICS membership as a strategic step to enhance collaboration and partnerships with other developing nations.
As the world’s fourth most populous nation, Indonesia has long sought membership in BRICS to bolster the influence of emerging economies and advance the interests of the Global South. The decision to include Indonesia was reached by consensus during the 2023 BRICS summit in Johannesburg, Brazil noted. However, Indonesia delayed its formal entry until after President Prabowo Subianto assumed office in October 2024.
Brazil, holding the BRICS presidency in 2025, emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to reforming global governance institutions and fostering deeper cooperation among developing countries.
With Indonesia’s inclusion, BRICS now comprises 11 members, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, further cementing its role as a platform for emerging economies.
