Burkina-Faso/BRICS expansion: nation shows interrest to join bloc

As relations grow between Burkina Faso and Russia, the nation has declared its intention to join the BRICS + group of emerging economies. The decision announced on Monday aims to counter the dominance of the dollar and euro in the global world, affirmed the Burkinabe Prime minister during a meeting with the Russian ambassador to Ouagadougou.

The Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem de Tambela has announced the country’s intention to join BRICS as cooperation flourishes between Russia and the west African country.

He was speaking during his meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Ouagadougou, Igor Martynov, according to the Burkinabe government on Monday. Also, both diplomats discussed bilateral cooperation in the spheres of nuclear energy, economy, and politics.

This intention to join the bloc is to ‘counter the dominance of the dollar and the euro’ and to achieve ‘a fairer international trade, » the government said on social media.

The government added that Moscow would host a bilateral economic forum on Burkina Faso’s economic and trade promotion from October 8-11, a forum which aims to promote economic cooperation between Burkina Faso and the host country and has been held in Senegal, Benin, France, Canada, South Korea, and Austria.

We recall that BRICS was established in 2009 as a cooperation platform for the largest developing economies, uniting Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined the group in 2010. On January 1, BRICS expanded its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has not formalized its participation but has been taking part in BRICS meetings. As of now, numerous countries have shown interest to join the bloc.
