GHANA/ PRESIDENTIAL POLLS: ELECTORAL COMMISSION PROMISES FREE, FAIR ELECTIONS

Ahead of December polls, the Ghana electoral commission says it is ready to ensure free, fair and transparent elections. The head of the commission made the remarks on Friday.

As Ghana gears up for the December 7 elections, the nation’s Electoral Commission (EC) has reassured the Ghanaian population it is dedicated to ensuring free, fair, transparent and credible elections

The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, made this promise during a special Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra, emphasizing that the commission is working tirelessly to ensure the integrity of the electoral process, a call that comes to resound that made in March this year.

According to the EC boss, the commission is working to address concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the voters’ register and has implemented a robust cleaning system to eliminate errors and discrepancies. However, she explained this process involves displaying the register at polling stations and online, allowing voters to review and correct their information.

To ensure transparency, the commission will re-exhibit the provisional voters’ register online, enabling voters to review their registration at no cost, adding that a template has been developed for political parties to report discrepancies in the register.

While the EC says it is engaging with stakeholders to demonstrate its commitment to building trust and ensuring the credibility of the electoral process, we recall that in September, the incumbent president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had called for a peaceful, free, and fair election in the upcoming 2024 polls.

All the same, he emphasized the role of the Electoral Commission in ensuring integrity in the process.
