The European Union announced on Monday November 18 a €20Million support package to the operations of Rwanda Security Forces in the Cabo Delgado province.
It’s worth noting that the funds is a Top-up to a €20million made public in December 2022.
Rwanda in July 2021 deployed troops to Cabo Delgado, Mozambique at the request of the Mozambican government to fight an Islamic state-linked insurgency.
On Monday November 18,The European Union adopted a €20 Million support package to operations of Rwanda security forces in Cabo Delgado province.
« This top-up measure is a testimony of the EU’s support to ‘African solutions for African problems and as part of the global fight against terrorism, it will also serve EU interests in the region. » EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell was quoted as saying in statement on Monday.
In December 2022, The Union announced a €20 million support package as well for the operations.
He added that the presence of the Rwanda Defence Force troops has been instrumental to make progress and remains key, especially given the recent withdrawal of the Southern African Development Community mission in Mozambique(SAMIM)
According to the EU in a statement, the additional support is set to cover costs related to personal equipment and strategic airlift necessary to maintain the Rwandan forces developemnt in Cabo Delgado province.
The Mozambican Northern province since 2017 has faced Islamist insurgency leading to the death and displacement of thousands.
