President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has announced Kigali’s bid to host the Formula One race.He confirmed this in Kigali ahead of the prize-giving ceremony of the FIA, the motorsport governing body.
Ahead of the prize-giving ceremony of the FIA, the motorsport governing body, which was hosted in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, on Friday night, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda announced his country’s bid to host the Formula One race.
The motorsport governing body is holding its general assemblies in Africa for the first time.
Rwandan motorsport officials held talks with F1 Chief Execurive Officer, Stefano Domenicali in September, with the sport targeting a return to the African continent.
However, South Africa is also eyeing a spot on the calendar in 2027.
« A big thank you to Stefano Domenicali and the entire team at Formula 1 for the good progress in our discussions so far.
“I assure you that we are approaching this opportunity with seriousness and commitment which it deserves. » President Kagame stated.
If F1 reaches a deal with Rwanda, the track is set to be designed by a former F1 driver and the chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association,Alexander Wurz.
Stefano Domenicali has asserted that talks with Rwanda have been known for some months and shows keeness to to hold a race in Africa.
F1 has not raced in Africa since 1993, when the Kyalami circuit hosted the last iteration of the South Africa grand Prix.
