Senegal’s president Bassirou Diomaye Faye plans to dissolve the nation’s parliament due to opposition majority, a decision to be made official on September 12, 2024.
According to the nation’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, to fully implement the vision in mind for the West African country, they need a parliamentary majority to implement policies, which are rooted in pan-Africanism and social justice, as per the media and this is impossible as the opposition currently controls the National Assembly.
To further act, President Faye consulted the Constitutional Council and the Council confirmed that the president can legally dissolve the National Assembly as of September 12. In his note dated September 9, the Senegalese leader stated that it was necessary to obtain the opinion of the prime minister and the president of the National Assembly.
With all the procedures engaged the president will subsequently issue a decree formally dissolving the Parliament and the document will set the date for the election of new deputies. Hence, the new legislature must be established no later than three months after the dissolution decree.
