The breakaway region of Somalia,Somaliland’s representative in the US Bashir Goth in an interview revealved that the region will be ready to host US military base in Berbera in exchange for recognition of its sovereignty.The interview was published on Thursday.
“Somaliland will be ready to host a US military base in Berbera if it serves the common interests of our two countries,” the breakaway territory of Somalia, Somalilands representative in Washington Bashir Goth as quoted as saying in an interview published on Thursday.
The Russian News Agency TASS, disclosed that the ambassador remarks came in response to a question about the regions willingness to host washington army camp if its independence from somalia is acknowledged.
“We consider ourselves an independent and sovereign state. Therefore, we view any partnership that we establish with friendly countries exclusively through the interests of our country,” the diplomat stated.
In 1991, Somaliland declared independence from Somalia after ousting of Somali militry leader Siad Barre and following a decade-long civil war.
the internationally not recognised territory on the southern coast of the gulf of Aden had since formed its own government, security structures, and currency. however, Mogadishu still regards the region as its ow territory.
Earlier this year, Ethiopia signed a deal with Somaliland to lease 20km of coastline to the landlocked state for commercial purposes and to build a marine base – in exchange for Somaliland being recognized as a country.
The controversial deal sparked tentions between Somalia and Addis Ababa that it goes against its territorial integrity.
In a positive updates recently, Somalia and Ethiopia agreed through Turkish mediation to forgo their differences for the growth of the horn of africa region and the african region.
