Sudan’s leader, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan has ruled out a return to pre-war relations with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He made the remarks Tuesday as the country reels from a deadly conflict that has claimed nearly 25,000 lives and displaced over 10 million since April 2023.
Sudan’s Sovereign Council leader, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has declared that a return to the pre-war status with the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is impossible.
In a televised speech marking Sudan’s 69th independence anniversary on Tuesday, Al-Burhan expressed willingness to support initiatives to end the war and ensure civilians’ safe return but condemned the RSF as « murderers and criminals. »
Since April 2023, clashes between Sudan’s army, led by Al-Burhan, and the RSF, headed by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, have killed nearly 25,000 people and displaced over 10 million.
The conflict, spanning 13 of Sudan’s 18 states, has caused widespread destruction and a looming famine.
International mediation efforts, including those by the US and Saudi Arabia, have failed to secure a cease-fire amid mutual accusations from both sides.
