In a decisive ruling, Tunisia’s Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) has announced that only three candidates will compete in the upcoming presidential election on October 6, as the electoral landscape changes with the exclusion of three others previously set to run.
Tunisians are grearing up for a historic election slated for October 6, 2024. Three candidates have been retained for the top job, as per Tunisia’s Independent High Authority for Elections. President Kais Saied, former MPs Zouhair Maghzaoui and Aya-chi Zammel, will appear on the ballot. The electoral authority announced on that rejected rulings by the Administrative Court to reinstate three candidates Abdellatif El Mekki, Mondher Znaidi, and Imed Daimi, citing that the court’s rulings were not formally received within the 48-hour timeframe established by electoral law. The electoral authority president Farouk Bouasker, suggested foul play by the opposition candidates regarding voter signature acquisition.
Kais Saied, who initially ascended to power in 2019, has faced criticism for consolidating authority after dissolving parliament and enacting a new constitution. He remains popular for his dramatic political shifts but has recently come under scrutiny for potential misuse of state resources during his campaign.
In contrast, Maghzaoui has criticized Saied’s actions while Zammel’s candidacy faces uncertainty due to allegations of signature forgery.
