With the recent surge in cases across Africa, Angola has reported its first case of the Mpox virus in a 28 year-old Congolese national.
The health ministry announced in a statement on Saturday .
In a statement on Saturday, Angola’s Ministry of Health reported the first mpox case in the country.
The statement read: « the Ministry of Health informs the population that a case of MPOX, formerly known as monkeypox, has been confirmed in Luanda province in a 28-year-old woman of Congolese nationality and that she and her close contacts have been isolated in the facilities of the Specialized Center for the Treatment of Endemics and Pandemics. »
As part of efforts to address the outbreak and curb its spread, the ministry also recommended frequent hand washing, avoiding contact with symptomatic individuals, using personal protective equipment, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, lymphadenopathy, and rash appear.
However, it added that the Ministry will continue to update the public on the epidemiological situation of this disease and encouraged the public to remain calm and reassured that everything possible is being done to protect the health of the entire population.
Earlier this month, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Africa CDC stated that the number of Mpox Infections in Africa Had increased by 500% since last year.
In order to protect the population, the Angolan government through the health ministry says it is carrying out disinfection of infected areas, tracing contacts, and conducting epidemiological investigations.
