Ethiopian foreign minister on Tuesday expressed worry over the supply of weapons to Somalia. The statement on Tuesday follows a shipment that arrived at MOGADISHU from Egypt. The PM feared the weapons might get into the hands of insurgents.
Following the recent supply of artillery to Somalia by Egypt, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Aztke Selassie expressed concern that the supply of ammunition by « external forces would further exacerbate the fragile security and would end up in the hands of terrorists in Somalia, » according to Ethiopian News Agency.
The statement on Tuesday follows reports of an Egyptian warship sending a cache of weapons, including artillery and anti-aircraft guns, to Somalia earlier this week. He also stressed Ethiopia’s « continued efforts » in fighting terrorism in the region.
Somalia, in turn, accused Ethiopia of smuggling weapons on Tuesday, stating that the purported weapons could end up in the hands of Islamist militants
The Ethiopian top diplomat met with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary Decarlo, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly to discuss issues of common interest, according to the nation’s state media.
