Incumbent president, Mohammed Would Ghazouani has been re-elected as per provincial results on Sunday. He won the June 29 elections with 56% of the vote over his other rivals.
As per provisional results, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has emerged the victor of the country’s presidential election, from over 99.27% of polling stations released by the West African nation’s electoral commission Sunday.
Ghazouani was re-elected in the Saturday election with over 56% of the vote, according to results from 4,468 polling stations out of 4,503 highlighted Mauritania’s independent electoral commission’s website.
The provisional results showed that Ghazouani’s main rival, anti-slavery activist Biram Dah Abeid, was second with 22.14%, followed by Hamadi Sidi El Mokhtar of the Islamist Tewassoul party with 12.8%. Before the provinsional results, Abeid rejected the first round results alleging irregularities.
It should be noted that about 2 million Mauritanians were eligible to cast a ballot in the June 29 presidential election held on Saturday. As per observers, the turnout was about 40% and the vote took place peacefully.
Re-elected President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, a former top soldier and the current president of the African Union had pledged to boost investment to spur a commodities boom in the West African country of 5 million people, as it prepares to start producing natural gas alongside providing security.
