US special envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello on a regional tour that kick-started in Kampala, Uganda highlighted the warring parties are not ready to negotiate despite efforts. He said this while discussing with different stakeholders paramount to the happenings in Sudan.
The U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, stated on Tuesday that the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are not showing readiness to resume negotiations in the coming days despite formal invitations to return to the negotiating table. This follows moves by the Sudan people’s liberation movement north, SPLM-N and the Sudan army to create a leveled ground between the two parties.
The U.S. envoy arrived in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, as part of a regional tour to exert more pressure to end the conflict in Sudan.
Speaking during a meeting with Sudanese women’s groups, parties, armed movements, resistance committees, and professionals in Kampala, Perriello underscored the urgency of ending the conflict, which has been largely neglected by the international community.
Over time, there has been press reports about the imminent resumption of the Jeddah negotiations, and that both parties had received invitations to start the round.
Perriello noted that they give a special attention and greater focus to ending the war in Sudan, which has become a forgotten crisis not discussed by the world.
He emphasized that his country opposes power-sharing between the conflicting parties, explaining that they deliberated on the issue with the African Union, as a partnership between the two sides in governance would lead to further wars and necessitates forming a civilian government.
