Gabon’s transitional President Brice clotaire Oligui Nguema is said to face three challengers in the presidential polls slated for April 12.The Interior Minister published the official list on Sunday.
General elections are due to be held in Gabon on April,12 2025 and campaigns kick starts on March 29.This will be the first elections in the country since the Bongo dynasty was overthrown in the 2023 coup after 56 years of rule.
Following the official list published on Sunday by the Interior Minister, the transitional leader, Brice Oligui Nguema will face three challengers in the presidential polls.
The country’s Interior Minister Hermann Immongault told reporters that 23 Gabonese had presented their candidacy, with only four « deemed admissible ».
He however,did not explain the reasons for the 19 rejections, which include leading trade unionist and senator Jean-Remy Yama.
All those whose candidacies have been rejected have the right to appeal to the country’s constitutional court.
Among the challengers is Alain-Claude Bilie By Nze, the last Prime Minister under ousted President Ali Bongo, who is seen as Oligui’s strongest opponent.
Nguema will also face Doctor Stéphane Germain Iloko, a former executive of the Gabonese Democratic Party, PDG, which dominated politics from 1961 to 2023.
The final candidate is Joseph Lapensée Essigone, a lawyer and tax inspector
