ISRAELI-HAMAS CONFLICT : QATAR HALTS ROLE AS MEDIATOR IN TALKS

Qatari Foreign Ministry annoynced on Saturday November 09 that it has suspended its role as mediator in talks between Israel and Hamas following the country’s conclusion on the two sides no longer negotiating in good faith.

In April, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister said efforts were being misused for narrow political interest which required a comprehensive evaluation of its role as mediator.

Qatar has suspended it’s mediation role in the Israeli-Hamas war after concluding that the two sides lack willingness to negotiate, accoridng to Majed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry in a statement on Saturday.

A diplomatic source as well noted that the mediation efforts are becoming more about politics rather than a serious attempt to secure peace, save the hostages and palestinian civilians.. »as consequence, the Hamas political office no longer serves its purpose. » The source stated.

During a temporary ceasefire mediated by Qatar and Egypt last November, Hamas released 105 hostages and Israel released 240 palestinian prisoners.

Qatar, which has hosted Hamas’ political office in Doha since 2012, alongside Egypt has served as a mediator for the two sides. Hamas has insisted that any accord with Israel must lead to a permanent end to the war in Gaza however, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied the request.

Israel’s military campaign, launched in response to Hamas’ October 7 attack, has killed more than 43,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in which most of the victims are women and children Accoridng to the United Nations.
