Mali – Ukraine/diplomatie tension: FM Diop Slams unsc for ignoring AES complaint on Kiev’s terrorism spree

As diplomatic tensions soar between Mali and Ukraine, Mali’s foreign minister, Abdoulaye Diop has slammed the UN Security Council for ignoring the plight of Mali and AES member States on Ukraine’s open support to terrorist groups in the region. He was speaking at the Summit of the Future on Sunday.

Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop in a recent address has criticized the UN Security Council for failing to consider a complaint from the AES regarding Ukraine’s open support for terrorism in Africa mostly the Sahel at the first Summit of the Future at the UN in New York.

Abdoulaye Diop during a session of the UN General Assembly on Sunday pinpointed Mali’s call for the Security Council to take appropriate responsibilities in the face of the deliberate choice by Ukraine in order to prevent subversive actions that threaten its stability.

Diop also added that the UN Secretary General condemned the terrorist attack on the capital of Mali on September 17, but no real action followed, highlighting that all states must act in accordance with their international obligations to ensure that those responsible for these crimes, as well as their financiers and sponsors, are held accountable.

It should be recalled that at the end of August, members of the Alliance of Sahel States had sent a letter to the president of the United Nations Security Council condemning Ukraine’s support for terrorist groups operating in the Sahel region.

However, the minister re-echoed the AES bloc’s call for parties involved to stop using terrorist groups as tools to destabilize sovereign nations.
